Kannawidan, is an Ilocano word that means practiced. Ilocanos celebrates the Kannawidan Festival every last week of January until first week of February. Included in the course of events is the commemoration of the foundation day of the province.
Kannawudan Festival focus on paying more attention to the children. It is because of the observation that many traditions, songs, dances and other Ilocano culture are not recognized by the younger generations of the province. Having this kind of festival, children may appreciate the rich culture and tradition of the Province of Ilocos Sur.
On the opening day, there is usually a mass held at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral. It is followed by a procession of Patron Saints of the 40 parishes here in Ilocos Sura and images of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary around Vigan City. It is the Ilocanos' way of giving thanks to the Almighty Gid not only for all the blessings but also for the rich heritage of the province.
